Asfaltbolaget to secure excellent cubicity and wide end product range with the new Metso portable process plant

Uncompromised, excellent cubicity and good capacity together with a wide product range were the key goals of the new crushing and screening plant of Asfaltbolaget in Furuby, Sweden. The company has reached all the above targets using a modern, electric-driven system built with Metso mobile and portable solutions.

Having activities around asphalt production, crushing and screening and earthworks, Asfaltbolaget Sweden AB has activities in four provinces in Southern Sweden.

The new Furuby process plant that started full production in February 2024 features the key parts from Metso. At the primary stage, a track mounted, diesel-driven Lokotrack® LT120™ jaw crusher is used.

The impressive tertiary and screening stages contain NW330GPS™ NW Rapid portable, wheel-mounted cone crusher and screen, and NW2060S™ NW Rapid portable screen.

The primary section has a capacity of 350 metric tons per hour and the tertiary crusher-double screen section 250 mtph.

Reliability of operation, references and service decisive

“We were very precise when selecting the company to deliver our new plant for high-quality end products. Metso and its Swedish distributor Värnamo Krosskonsult gave us a good impression already at the preliminary procurement stage and have kept everything they promised during the whole plant planning and execution process,” comments Patrik Magnusson, Site manager for Asfaltbolaget asphalt and aggregates operations.

“Reliability of operation, extensive references and wide service capabilities were the decisive selecting points for us. We could count for a fast and professional service while Värnamo Krosskonsult is situated quite near to our site,” he adds.

According to Patrik Magnusson, a wheel-mounted, portable plant was a clear choice for the company to secure fast moving of the plant in the future, if needed.

Digital reporting makes our daily work easier

A state-of-the-art automation system for the plant, making all process steering and data collecting possible, was designed by Värnamo Krosskonsult.

“This system includes a direct, digital reporting that makes our daily work easier, including the following of all production details.”

Patrik Magnusson is happy for the product quality results achieved using Metso jaw and cone crushers and screens:

“In addition to capacity, our new plant has reached the strict cubicity standards required for the asphalt production. In addition to our own asphalt plant, we can sell the surplus production outside,” he adds.

From hard granite to all asphalt grades

Asfaltbolaget processes hard, beautifully reddish granite into all possible grades needed at the nearby, modern asphalt plant. After primary and secondary crushing, the materials are loaded into stockpile, where tunnel conveyor feeds the rocks to scalper taking out fines.

At the tertiary portable plant, Metso’s Nordberg® GP330™ cone crusher executes the tertiary crushing, feeding impressive, four deck inclined CVB2060-4M screen. Oversized materials go back to the crusher, and further to NW2060S portable screen, featuring a similar sized four-deck CVB inclined screen.

These sturdy screens weighing 5,1 tons each, feature a large, 2 x 6-meter screen deck areas and can classify up to 800 tons of materials per hour.

As end products, Asfaltbolaget gets a wide variety of grades: 0-2 mm, 2-4 mm, 4-8 mm, 8-11 mm, 11-16 mm, 16-22 mm, 0-16 mm, and 0-32 mm. The two inclined four-deck screens house steel wire mesh screening media for accurate separation and long lifetime.

Cubicity to meet the highest demands

Asfaltbolaget’s certified quality is constantly monitored by collecting samples. The new plant has already achieved the cubicity ratio of 8,5. That ratio is accepted for 80% of the asphalt pavements in Sweden.

The final target is to reach level 7, when asphalt can be delivered even to the upper level of motorway pavements.

To secure the high cubicity, the old vertical shaft impactor (VSI) will be soon replaced by a brand-new Metso Barmac. Most of the production will be taken through the VSI for a final touch to the cubicity.
